Tile Myth & Misconception #1 Large Tiles Are Too Big for a Small Space
I’m always puzzled when I hear this one.
This myth or misconception comes up most often when we’re talking about bathrooms, particularly those “smaller” bathrooms, which are typically around 5’x8’ or 5’x7’ — essentially the width of a standard tub. Let me explain why this doesn’t quite add up.
Breaking It Down: Size and Space
Let’s take that average bathroom size of 5’x8’ with a tub or shower. The dry floor space to be tiled is about 5.5’x5.5’.
12x12 Tile Layout:

Now, if you choose a 12”x12” tile, you’ll need approximately 28 tiles to cover the floor.
12x24 Tile Layout:

If you choose a 12”x24” tile, you’ll need about 15 tiles.
24x24 Tile Layout:

If you choose a 24”x24” tile, you’ll only need 8 tiles.
24x48 Tile Layout:

If you choose a 24”x48” tile, you’ll need about 5 tiles.
48x48 Tile Layout:

If you increase the size even further to something like 48”x48”, you could potentially tile the space with just 2 tiles.
What’s Happening Here?
As the size of the tile increases, the number of grout lines decreases. Fewer grout lines mean:
- A cleaner, less busy appearance: The uninterrupted surface makes the space feel larger.
- Easier maintenance: Less grout means fewer areas to clean and fewer opportunities for moisture to seep in.
- Strategic placement of cuts: As tiles get larger, the cut pieces are strategically placed under fixtures (like the vanity and toilet), maximizing the visible surface area for a seamless look.
Isn’t that a win-win?
Aesthetic Advantages of Large Tiles
Let’s talk about how this impacts design.
If the tile has a marble look, larger pieces showcase more of the tile’s natural veining and design, creating a luxurious, seamless appearance (explore our marble look tiles or view our catalog). Plus, larger tiles make it easier and more practical to control vein placement during installation, ensuring a cohesive flow. With smaller tiles, veins can end up going in multiple directions, which makes it harder to achieve that high-end look.
Even with a minimalistic design, such as a concrete or plain matte finish, larger tiles work to your advantage
(explore our cement-look tiles or view in our catalog). These tiles lend themselves to clean, sleek, and zen-like aesthetics-less grout, more surface, and a harmonious vibe.

What About Small Tiles?
Don’t get me wrong — small tiles have their place! Mosaics, subway tiles, and small squares are timeless and classic. They bring charm and character to a space and remain popular for good reason. Smaller formats are perfect for creating intricate patterns, adding visual interest, or achieving a more traditional tile look.

The Bottom Line
When choosing tile size, it all comes down to the overall feel and look you’re trying to create:
- Sleek, modern, and low-maintenance: Large-format tiles are a fantastic option, even for small spaces.
- Classic or detailed aesthetic: Smaller tiles will suit your vision perfectly.
So, the next time someone says large tiles won’t work in a small bathroom, you can confidently tell them: It’s a myth!
