Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.
A: I started Grimes Carpentry in 1982 doing mostly exterior renovations. We gradually moved into doing interior renovations and it remains the bulk of our business. We are proud that our customer base has been mainly acquired through referrals.
Q: What geographic area(s) does your company serve?
A: We serve customers in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Bronx as well as Nassau County. We are licensed in both New York City and Nassau County.
Q: What type of jobs does Grimes Carpentry specialize in?
A: As mentioned, we specialize in interior renovations and repairs; everything from tiling to woodwork and everything in between.
Q: How did you get started in the contracting/tiling business?
A: I’ve always had an interest in building things with my hands and was lucky enough to make a career of it. Part of completing kitchens, bathrooms and flooring is to be skilled in all aspects of the job and to know where to get the best supplies that are specific to each customer’s needs.
Q: How long have you been a Tiles Unlimited client?
A: We’ve been a satisfied Tiles Unlimited client since they opened in 2004.
Q: Why do you recommend that your clients shop at Tiles Unlimited?
A: They offer a large selection of tiles where customers can really find what they are looking for. Their prices are customer friendly and their Tile Consultants (especially Alex and Francesca) provide superior customer service.
Q: What should a homeowner consider when they are in the process of selecting an installer/contractor?
A: Always look for a licensed and insured contractor who can also provide several references and is well known to their customers. Ask them for pictures of their completed jobs.
Q: What are some of the current product and installation trends you are seeing?
A: We’re seeing more and more large-format tiles (tiles greater than 15″), intricate designs, glass tile and brighter colors.
Q: Describe one of your favorite tile and stone installation projects and why you liked it so much.
A: We recently renovated a bathroom for a client with mobility issues. We removed the bathtub and installed a tiles shower that allows the client to use it despite their mobility issues. The job came out beautifully but seeing the customer able to use his bathroom again was even better.
Q: As you know, Tiles Unlimited’s mission is “Making a difference one square foot at a time” under which they perform many charitable and philanthropic activities. Does Grimes Carpentry do anything similar?
A: We’ve done charitable repairs for a local women’s shelter.
