Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

A: I started Grimes Carpentry in 1982 doing mostly exterior renovations. We gradually moved into doing interior renovations and it remains the bulk of our business. We are proud that our customer base has been mainly acquired through referrals.

Q: What geographic area(s) does your company serve?

A: We serve customers in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Bronx as well as Nassau County. We are licensed in both New York City and Nassau County.

Q: What type of jobs does Grimes Carpentry specialize in?

A: As mentioned, we specialize in interior renovations and repairs; everything from tiling to woodwork and everything in between.

Q: How did you get started in the contracting/tiling business?

A: I’ve always had an interest in building things with my hands and was lucky enough to make a career of it. Part of completing kitchens, bathrooms and flooring is to be skilled in all aspects of the job and to know where to get the best supplies that are specific to each customer’s needs.

Q: How long have you been a Tiles Unlimited client?

A: We’ve been a satisfied Tiles Unlimited client since they opened in 2004.

Q: Why do you recommend that your clients shop at Tiles Unlimited?

A: They offer a large selection of tiles where customers can really find what they are looking for. Their prices are customer friendly and their Tile Consultants (especially Alex and Francesca) provide superior customer service.

Q: What should a homeowner consider when they are in the process of selecting an installer/contractor?

A: Always look for a licensed and insured contractor who can also provide several references and is well known to their customers. Ask them for pictures of their completed jobs.

Q: What are some of the current product and installation trends you are seeing?

A: We’re seeing more and more large-format tiles (tiles greater than 15″), intricate designs, glass tile and brighter colors.

Q: Describe one of your favorite tile and stone installation projects and why you liked it so much.

A: We recently renovated a bathroom for a client with mobility issues. We removed the bathtub and installed a tiles shower that allows the client to use it despite their mobility issues. The job came out beautifully but seeing the customer able to use his bathroom again was even better.

Q: As you know, Tiles Unlimited’s mission is “Making a difference one square foot at a time under which they perform many charitable and philanthropic activities. Does Grimes Carpentry do anything similar?

A: We’ve done charitable repairs for a local women’s shelter.

Meet the Contractor – Donato’s Construction, Tile & Marble

This is the second in an occasional series on contractors/tile installers that do business with Tiles Unlimited and have proven themselves as professional, reliable and accountable. If you have any questions, require additional information or wish to discuss hiring them, please scroll down to the bottom for how to contact the contractor.

Meet Donato Valenzano, owner of Donato’s Construction, Tile & Marble. Click here to see a photo gallery of their work.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

A: My grandparents were in the marble and construction business and others in my family were plaster and marble artisans. I came to New York at the age of 6 and at the age of 18 I started my own marble business. My company specializes in tile, marble, stone and glass installations as well as kitchen and bathroom remodels. We also do a lot of outdoor living (think outdoor kitchens, patios, balconies, BBQs) work. We are experts in tile installation, especially high-end work such as delicate marble and waterjet mosaics.

We also do a fair amount of restoration work in Manhattan and Brooklyn where there are thousands of brownstones and lobbies that have been poorly maintained. You can learn more about that at the Thor and Partners website.

Q: What geographic area(s) does your company serve?

A: We serve customers in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk counties for both commercial and residential projects.

Q: What type of jobs does Donato’s Construction, Tile & Marble specialize in?

A: As mentioned, we specialize in high-end tile installations including tile, marble, stone veneer products, glass tile as well as waterproofing and curbless showers. In fact, we installed many of the floor tile displays in the Tiles Unlimited showroom. When Tiles Unlimited has a difficult install, they usually call us.

Q: How did you get started in the contracting/tiling business?

A: I’m a second generation marble and tile expert that started at the age of 18.

Q: How long have you been a Tiles Unlimited client?

A:We’ve been a client since their opening in 2004. Before that, we used Glendale Tile, the predecessor to Tiles Unlimited. We always recommend Tiles Unlimited due to our long standing relationship and the excellent service we receive.

Q: Why do you recommend that your clients shop at Tiles Unlimited?

A: We recommend our customers make their purchases at Tiles Unlimited because of their professionalism, knowledge, fair pricing and excellent service. In addition, they have an excellent selection of tile at all different price points.

Q: What should a homeowner consider when they are in the process of selecting an installer/contractor?

A: We believe that a contractor’s work speaks for itself and is more important than only considering their price. A low price is worthless is the contractor doesn’t have the artisan skill to install the products you are using in your remodel. Of course you want a competitive bid from your contractor/tile installer but we can’t stress enough that skill is as important.

Q: What are some of the current product and installation trends you are seeing?

A: We do a lot of large-format tile work (tiles 15″ and larger), waterjet mosaics (which require a high level of expertise) and mixed use of stone tile and steel products. We’re also seeing more and more waterproofing and crack-isolation jobs as well as underfloor heating.

Q: Describe one of your favorite tile and stone installation projects and why you liked it so much.

A: We’ve been fortunate to work on projects for some very high profile Manhattan locations; Cher’s apartment in downtown NYC, a Trump building lobby on the West Side, NASDAQ Stock Exchange lobby and many homes in the Hamptons. Of course, not all our jobs are high profile ones as you can see in our photo gallery.

Q: As you know, Tiles Unlimited’s mission isMaking a difference one square foot at a time under which they perform many charitable and philanthropic activities. Does Donato’s Construction do anything similar?

A: We enthusiastically support veterans and the disabled community and are happy to provide special pricing for members of those communities.

Meet the Contractor – Robart Construction

Tiles Unlimited, Robart Construction

This is the first in an occasional series on contractors/tile installers that do business with Tiles Unlimited and have proven themselves as professional, reliable and accountable. If you have any questions, require additional information or wish to discuss hiring them, please scroll down to the bottom for how to contact the contractor.

Meet Robert Pellegrino, owner of Robart Construction. Click here to see a photo gallery of their work.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your business.

A: I got started in construction when I was 19 years old. After working for several companies offering different specialties, I took on a partner with a goal of rebuilding the world. Although the partnership dissolved after 2 years, I continued on and built a successful construction/contracting company with 36 years of experience.

Q: What geographic area(s) does your company serve?

A: We serve customers in Queens and parts of Brooklyn. Most of our jobs are in the local areas of Middle Village, Glendale, Forest Hills, Maspeth and surrounding area.

Q: What type of jobs does Robart Construction specialize in?

A: We are specialists in kitchen and bathroom renovations and do a lot of tiling work. We are very happy to complete all interior projects. We even built a few new homes in the Maspeth area back in the day.

til, kitch, bath specialists

Q: How did you get started in the contracting/tiling business?

A: We’ve been installing tile for quite some time. When we started doing the tile aspect of our projects, it was pretty much installing 4×4 tiles you see in many of the homes and apartments in Queens. Times has sure changed. Today we install tiles with a wide variety of looks (wood, marble, stone) and the size of the tiles has increased dramatically. A few short years ago, a 12″tile was considered large-format. Today, we regularly install tiles that are 24″, 36″ and even 48″.

Q: How long have you been a Tiles Unlimited client?

A:We’ve been a client since 2005 and before that, we used Glendale Tile, the predecessor to Tiles Unlimited. We always recommend Tiles Unlimited due to our long standing relationship and the excellent service we receive.

Q: Why do you recommend that your clients shop at Tiles Unlimited?

A: We recommend our customers make their purchases at Tiles Unlimited because of the helpfulness of the staff, fair pricing and accurate delivery time of materials.

Q: What should a homeowner consider when they are in the process of selecting an installer/contractor?

A: We believe that recommendations from satisfied clients is the best way to find a reliable contractor/tile installer. Most of our jobs are referrals from satisfied clients.

Q: What are some of the current product and installation trends you are seeing?

A: The most popular tiles right now are porcelain wood-looks and the 12 x 24 large format tiles. Of course subway tiles are classic and contemporary and continue to be a favorite as well. Much like floor and wall tiles, we see the trend of larger-format subway tiles in an array of colors.

Q: Describe one of your favorite tile and stone installation projects and why you liked it so much.

A: One of our favorite tile jobs was a bathroom in the Glendale (Queens) area. It was a combination of a typical 5 x 8 bathroom and an adjacent bedroom. It was a huge room with room for a shower with a seat and pebble floor custom glass enclosure , A drop in tub with a tiled surround, vanity and a dressing/make-up area. Not to mention plenty of closet space to complete the room.

Q: As you know, Tiles Unlimited’s mission isMaking a difference one square foot at a time under which they perform many charitable and philanthropic activities. Does Robart Construction do anything similar?

A: We enthusiastically support the Queensboro chapter of UNICO. They are a private non-profit organization, comprised of individuals of Italian ancestry committed to providing a better quality of life for those in need on a community and national level. They do a lot of charitable work including providing college scholarships to deserving students and helping returning war veterans.
